Is Shimano Nexus any good? ›

Because of the way the Inter-8 system works it has a reputation for being a little rough in the bottom few gears, but after 100 or so miles the noise died away and pedalling felt only marginally rougher than a well-maintained derailleur system in the bottom gears and just the same in higher gears.

Some sources claim the Alfine 11's smoother and dual shifting makes a better climber, while other's seem to think that the Nexus 8 is more robust and handles heavy loads better. "Everybody" complains of at least some cog skipping, but no agreement on which of them is worse, or whether it's enough to be an issue.

The SL-C3000 shift lever is compatible with the SHIMANO NEXUS INTER-7 internal geared hub.

Internal gear hub vs derailleur

The main differentiators between gear hubs and derailleur systems are the additional weight and price of the gear hub. However, gear hubs can also be less efficient than well-maintained derailleur systems because there's more friction in the mechanism.

A large proportion of its range is compatible with Shimano's shifting systems. This is because Microshift uses the same cable pull ratio on certain products. It makes Microshift products ideal inexpensive replacements if you're shopping on a budget or can't find Shimano in stock.

As a general rule of thumb, it's best not to mix and match drivetrain components from different brands. While cranksets, chains and cassettes are mostly inter-compatible between brands, generally speaking, shifters and derailleurs aren't. Size, weight, and design

It's the same size screen as before, but the new model has changed shape ever so slightly and is now lighter too. Measurements of the new Nexus 7 are 7.62mm x 200mm x 114.3mm compared to 10.45mm x 198mm x 120mm. Weight has also been reduced in the new Nexus 7, but by only a fraction.

The two main differences compared to Alfine 8 seem to be the exterior finish, which is better on the Alfine, and the braking options. Both can use rim brakes, Nexus 8 Premium can use roller brakes, while Alfine can use disc brakes. AFAIK the coaster brake Nexus hubs are/were the "ordinary" version with plain bearings.

Depends on the hub and if you ride in wet weather often and if it uses sealed bearings. I have some Shimano wheels with sealed bearings that are 13 years old and have over 110,000 miles on them and I have never lubricated them and they are running strong. I suspect I'll get to 150,000 miles or more on them.
