The choir director and music pedagogue Michael Betzner-Brandt from Berlin is particularly renowned in the choir scene for his creativity. In order to perform Verdi's Requiem with his chamber choir, he arranged the work as a "chamber oratorio". The piano reduction, which forms the foundation, is expanded by parts for horn, double bass, marimba and percussion. The expressive orchestral timbres of the original are not lost, but transformed into more delicate shades. The Requiem is enhanced especially in its many chamber music passages.

Giuseppe Verdi was born in Le Roncole on the 9th October 1813, the son of an innkeeper and small-scale farmer. Although he grew up in poor circ*mstances his extraordinary musical talent was soon recognized and he received organ lessons, then – assisted by a patron – he entered the Busseto Gymnasium. His benefactor Antoni Barezzi continued to assist him privately after the Milan Conservatoire had refused him admission.Following some years as organist and director of music in Busseto he made his breakthrough in Milan with the premiere of the opera "Nabucco" in 1842. The works which he wrote after 1850 are still among the principal pillars of the opera repertoire. Personal details

Michael Betzner-Brandt wurde 1972 in Adenau/Eifel geboren. Er lebt als Dirigent, Vokalist, Autor, Pädagoge, Stummfilmpianist und Familienvater in Berlin. Er studierte Kirchenmusik (Gregoriushaus Aachen), Schulmusik (HfM Detmold), Philosophie (Uni Bielefeld, TU Berlin) und Chordirigieren (UdK Berlin, Prof. Uwe Gronostay). Seit 2003 unterrichtet er Chorleitung an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Dort gründete er die Fabulous Fridays - JazzPopChor der UdK Berlin. Konzertreisen mit diesem Chor führten nach Frankreich (Paris und Caen, 2007), USA (Washington und New York, 2008), China (Peking, Nanjing, Shanghai, 2009) und Indonesien (Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, 2011). Mit den Fabulous Fridays gewann er den 1. Preis beim Berliner Chorwettbewerb 2009 und den 2. Preis sowie einen Sonderpreis beim Deutschen Chorwettbewerb 2010 in Dortmund.Seit 2010 leitet Michael Betzner-Brandt den Jazzchor BerlinVokal. Im April 2010 gründete er High Fossility - RockPopChor 60+. Mit diesem Chor für Über-60jährige interpretiert er Klassiker der Popgeschichte neu. Im Radialsystem V in Berlin-Friedrichshain veranstaltet er einmal monatlich den "Ich-kann-nicht-singen-Chor". Mit seinem innovativen Konzept CHOR KREATIV - Singen ohne Noten begeistert er seit mehr als 10 Jahren viele Kursteilnehmer und ein großes Publikum im In- und Ausland. da hat sich das Sparen gelohnt: Nur noch fünf Musiker sind am Werk und können zusammen alles von ganz laut bis ganz leise bieten. Verdi kannte das Marimbaphon natürlich noch nicht. Der Klang hätte ihm gewiss zugesagt: flirrend-flächig mit vier weichen oder virtuos-punktuell mit zwei oder mehr harten Schlägeln, zudem fünf Oktaven Umfang. ... Die Verwendung der Marimba in der Bearbeitung ist wohl eher Geniestreich als fauler Zauber es kann, wie das Klavier, viele Aufgaben übernehmen und färbt den Klang ungewöhnlich und unaufdringlich ein.

Dabei orientiert sich Betzner-Brandt durchaus an den ursprünglichen Klangwirkungen [...] und schafft im „Dies irae” ähnlich packende Momente wie Verdi. Innovativ sind „Quid sum miser” und „Lacrimosa”: Hier übernimmt der Chor effektvoll summend die Partie der Streicher, mutig wirkt dagegen die Übertragung der Ferntrompeten im „Tuba mirum” auf Marimba.
Durch die reduzierte Besetzung treten die meisterhaft gesetzten Partien von Chor und Solisten in den Vordergrund, gerade in den leiseren Momenten durchaus eine Bereicherung.

Can I also use the “normal” vocal score /03 and the choral score /05 from the full-scale version to sing the version presented here?

Yes, the vocal parts are absolutely identical, and therefore the vocal scores and choral scores are compatible with both versions. For the small version, you just need an insert sheet to supplement the vocal score (27.303/53) or choral score (27.303/55), as the chorus is used to hum in two additional passages.
