How long does it take to get a massage license in California? ›

To obtain CAMTC certification, you must attend a CAMTC-approved massage therapy school in California with a program length of 500 hours or more. Of those 500 hours, a minimum of 100 must be in anatomy and physiology, contraindications, health and hygiene, and business and ethics.

The MBLEx is a computer-based test that requires you to answer 100 multiple-choice questions within 110 minutes.

Full business attire is not necessary, but your clothing should be clean and neat. Don't wear shorts and a tank top—think semi-formal, with long sleeves. Because you will probably be giving a massage, you'll want to be comfortable.

Do not cram the night before an exam. Begin studying 3-4 weeks in advance for 45-minute increments. Walk away after each period of time and take a break. Take practice exams offered by the individual organizations but do not memorize the questions.

Passing of an exam such as the MBLEx or BCETMB was previously a requirement, however this requirement has been suspended through December 31, 2027. Although the current regulations in California do not mandate an examination for CAMTC certification, many therapists still find value in taking the MBLEx.

As with most massage specialties, a certification is not required.

There are no constraints or laws governing entering a massage establishment. To receive treatment one must be able to give consent. In the US you must be 18 to give consent. In my practice I have a consent form and require that a parent or legal guardian sign for a minor.
