“My eight seniors, everything goes out to them. They want to win,” said Perry, who has coached all three seasons (football, girls’ basketball, boys’ volleyball) for 34 of the last 36 years. “We say ‘Shock the world, but don’t shock ourselves’.”

Added Gomez Cabo: “This win is super huge for the seniors and for Coach Perry. It’s his last year here, so we want to give him a special sendoff. We want to make a huge run here, give him a special ending to his career.”

For senior Cam Johnston (team-high 16 kills, 11 digs) it was the last season being coached by his mother Megan for the Raiders (11-10).

“Obviously this loss is tough, but none of us are upset about the way we played,” said Johnson, who is committed to Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. “We’re all going to miss each other. It’s like a family. We built a great program in a couple of years, we’ve been all the way to the end, I’m just going to miss it.”

Bumping up to No. 16 at the end gave the Johnstons a chance for another home game. Cam’s sister Sadie helps with the team, and more family members were in the crowd.

“It was a good journey,” coach Johnston said. “We’ve had a lot of fun together, and accomplished a lot.”

Added Cam: “I don’t think I’ll ever experience something like that again. It’s special and I do think about that when I’m playing.”
