Looking for fun and unique 50th birthday trip ideas for your upcoming milestone birthday? Well, then, here’s a curation from travel experts.

After the success of my post with scores of 40th birthday trip ideas, I knew this was in the making – especially now since I edge closer to 50 and look for inspiration on these lines myself.

Milestone birthday celebrations are definitely a thing and I have always been a keen advocate of spending on experiences rather than gifts.

I myself gifted myself a trip to the Day of the Dead festival in Mexico for one of my birthdays and a jungle survival course in tiger-infested forests of India for another.

I can safely say that those two birthday trips are far more valuable to me than any birthday gift I have gifted myself or received from others.

Experiences make memories of a lifetime.

So, without further ado, let’s get to hear these epic 50th birthday holiday ideas from fellow travellers.

Ha Giang Province by Simon of Backpack Moments

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (4)

Nothing screams an awesome 50th birthday trip more than a motorcycle adventure on some of the most scenic roads in the world!

The Ha Giang Province in North Vietnam is isolated, picturesque, and incredibly diverse. This magnificent region is about 7 hours north of Vietnam. Once there you will be rewarded with breathtaking vistas and the feel of freedom as you ride down dazzling winding roads.

It is most memorable to drive the Ha Giang Loop by yourself by renting a motorcycle in Ha Giang City but if you can’t ride one or don’t have the necessary documents, it’s easy to hire an “easy rider” – an experienced driver who’ll tour you around the Loop on the back of his motorcycle. The standard Ha Giang Loop circles the region passing through Yen Minh, Sa Phin, Dong Van, Meo Vac, and back via Du Gia. It takes between 3 and 5 days to complete, sleeping in quaint guesthouses and driving during the day.

The best attractions on the Loop are the Fairy Bosom Mountain viewpoint, the Palace of the Hmong Kings, the Lung Cu flagpole marking Vietnam’s northernmost point, as well as the amazing Ma Pi Leng Pass above the curves of the Sông Nho Quế River.

Tuscany by Linn Haglund of Brainy Backpackers

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (7)

A great 50th birthday trip idea is to the picturesque wine region of Tuscany. The best way to get around is on a road trip, starting in Florence.

You can easily fly in there and spend a couple of days exploring world-famous art galleries like the Uffizi Gallery and the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo’s masterpiece David stands proud. Strolling around the medieval old town eating delightful pizza and drinking Tuscan wine just adds to the experience.

The old town is also the best area to stay in Florence as you got everything within walking distance. Next, head to San Gimignano where you can climb the Torre Grossa for spectacular views of the town and surrounding vineyards.

There are several farm stays around San Gimignano where you can learn more about wine production in the area and taste all the best Tuscan wines. Further, make your way to Siena.

There, you can have Aperol Spritz at the Piazza del Campo and visit the cathedral complex which is a deep dive into the city’s history. Yet the best area to go for a road trip is through Val d’Orcia where you will experience the iconic cypress trees, vineyards, and go wine tasting. If you have the time, continue down to Saturnia Thermal Baths before looping back up to Florence.

Antarctica by Josie of Josie Wanders

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (8)

A few years ago I wrote a Fifty Before 50 bucket list, and the top thing to do on the list was an Antarctic cruise. I originally had no plans for it to be the trip for my 50th, it was just meant to be completed beforehand.

Thanks to covid, I very nearly didn’t fit it in, but with less than a month to spare, I got there.

The expedition cruises to Antarctica are amazing, but they come with a price. As a compromise, I did a cruise from Santiago, Chile to Buenos Aires with Holland America Line which included four days down at Antarctica.

Because of the large ship, we couldn’t get off, but it was such a magical experience cruising through that white land. I could have done it for weeks.

Wildlife is probably not the first thing that comes to mind about Antarctica, but we saw so much. Many different types of whales, penguins and seals, and a constant stream of different seabirds.

It was the penguins that captivated me as they porpoised in and out of the icy waves right alongside the ship, or jumped on and off the passing icebergs.

It was an unforgettable way to celebrate my fiftieth – now the challenge is how I top that in a few years for 60!

Punta Cana by Chris from Punta Cana Travel Blog

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (10)

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is a perfect place to celebrate your 50th birthday. You can either head on an adventurous road trip through the Dominican Republic or celebrate in style in one of Punta Cana’s all-inclusive resorts.

Most people probably will decide on the latter option, particularly as it is super convenient and allows you to fully enjoy unlimited drinks and delicious à-la-carte meals not only during your birthday but for the entire vacation. Furthermore, you can enjoy your day in a beautiful and safe Caribbean setting, it doesn’t matter if you decide to spend your day at the pool, tanning at the beach, having a long walk along one of Punta Cana’s beautiful beaches or exploring the surrounding when taking one of Punta Cana’s popular excursions.

Especially if you bring your friends to the same resort, such an all-inclusive holiday will be an unforgettable trip everyone will talk about for a super long time.

If you want something special for your 50th birthday, you can hop on a party boat in Punta Cana (if you are still feeling young), book an exclusive rum tasting (for those enjoying the more elegant sides of life) or enjoy the birthday dinner options some resorts are offering. Make sure to let the staff know it is your birthday for a special surprise.

If you’re not a resort person and want to experience the local life of the Dominican Republic, you can also plan a unique road trip through the country, where plenty of unique attractions are waiting for you, such as pristine beaches all around the country, multiple turquoise waterfalls, several cute fishing villages or the most iconic historic place in the entire Caribbean, the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo.

Dubrovnik by Shweta of Zest in a Tote

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (11)

If you are a Game of Thrones enthusiast, celebrating your 50th in The King’s Landing would appeal to you. There are GoT locations all over Ireland, Iceland, Spain and more but nothing like the walled city of Dubrovnik to make it feel alive.

You can stay in an airbnb in the old town or splurge on a beach resort just outside the main town. Either way, you are bound to have a gala time in this beautiful place. It is a popular destination and gets crowded in July and August.

The old town is surrounded by thick high walls and walking these 6-metre-thick walls is one activity that cannot be missed. You get lovely views of the Adriatic Sea and the old town itself. There are many historical points of interest in Dubrovnik and an early morning walk in the old town to see these sites would not be wasted.

You have to take the cable car up the Srd Hill one evening. There is an old fort up the hill waiting to be explored. But the best part of this cable car ride is the stunning views of the city and the ocean that lies beneath your feet.

The bars and cafes come alive each evening in the old town. There are well known ones like the Buza Bar. You have to grab a table early there if you want to toast your family / friends on your birthday looking out at the bejewelled Adriatic Ocean.

On this road trip, you’ll likely want to spend it hiking and exploring the trails that lead to some magnificent sights. However if hiking’s not your thing, that’s okay too! Each park is filled with scenic lookout points that are easy to access and still allow you to enjoy the parks to the fullest.

Baja California by Daria of Exploring Baja California

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (14)

Located along the US border, Baja California is a wonderful destination to celebrate your 50th birthday, if you like adventure and history.

Whether you decide to party it up in Cabo San Lucas, or start in Tijuana and take a trip south from there, Baja California offers a plethora of opportunities to mark your special date.

The best way to explore the region is by renting a car, but if you want to stick to just one place, you will have just as much fun.

Some of the most popular places in the region are Valle De Guadalupe, one of the wine-producing regions in Mexico, where you can enjoy the spectacular landscapes, tour vineyards and taste the delicious drink; Cabo San Lucas, which is known for its spectacular resorts and high-end restaurants; and La Paz, a gateway to adventure in Baja California Sur, from where you can go on wildlife watching trips, as well as enjoy sandboarding on nearby dunes, kite surfing and in La Ventana and take day trips to nearby towns Loreto and Mulege, which are a few hours north from La Paz.

Unlike other destinations that require more time and planning, Baja California is a short flight from the United States and Canada, and if you buy your tickets in advance, you could save a good chunk of money.

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (16)

Taking a trip for your 50th birthday is a great way to celebrate entering a new decade – and London is the perfect destination. Full of iconic landmarks, culture, and dynamic energy, London provides an unforgettable experience catering to a variety of interests.

Immerse yourself in history by visiting Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London. Cruise the River Thames, explore London’s eclectic neighborhoods, and gaze at the iconic skyline from high aboard the London Eye.

London’s famous department store – Harrods – is great for browsing before heading to a more reasonably priced market in Camden or Covent Garden. (Pick up a birthday present for yourself along the way.)

Take in a show at the West End, anything from Shakespeare to modern. After you’ve seen the sights, retreat to Hyde Park or Regent’s Park for some relaxation amid the urban flurry. And no birthday would be complete without a stop at one of London’s unique and historic pubs for a birthday toast.

Two girlfriends and I are heading to London in a few months to mark our 50th birthdays, and we can’t wait to create cherished memories exploring this vibrant, cultural, and world-class city.

Scotland by Kristin of Scotland Less Explored

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (17)

Scotland’s countryside is the perfect place for a 50th birthday celebration. The highlands and islands have amazing scenery as well as luxurious cabins and cottages. You can even stay in a castle for a couple of nights!

To see the more remote parts you should plan to spend one to two weeks in Scotland. Having a rental car is by far the easiest way to get around since public transport is limited.

Fly to Inverness and start with a few days on the Isle of Skye. Here you can see the Eilean Donan castle, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and also learn about whisky. For a whisky tasting go to the Isle of Skye Distillers.

From Skye it is a short ferry ride to the islands of South and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. The beaches here are amazing and the islands will give you a proper taste of what remote Scotland is like.

On the way back stop at Fort William and take the steam train to Mallaig. It was made famous by the Harry Potter films. Any hikers out there will also want to climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK. If you are an experienced hiker then do one the northern routes rather than the ‘standard’ route which starts from the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre.

Scotland is a perfect 50th birthday trip for outdoor lovers, couples and small groups of friends. The accommodation ranges from top-end castles such as Inverlochy Castle to remote accommodation on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.

Washington DC By Jennifer of Family Trip Guides

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (21)
Washington, D.C. is always a great idea, and even more so when celebrating a milestone birthday like 50 years! While DC is best known for politics and government, there is so much to discover including history and its rich foodie scene. After living in DC for 12 years, here is my perfect 50th birthday trip itinerary.

First start your trip with a visit to the Washington Monument to get a birds-eye overview of the National Mall and surrounding neighborhoods. Next, take a walk along the National Mall which is home to many of the city’s most famous monuments and museums, including the Lincoln Memorial, and the National World War II Memorial.

Have lunch at the beautiful National Gallery of Art Sculpture Pavilion and then wander through one of the 17 Smithsonians in Washington, D.C. They are all free and only NMAAHC requires pre-timed tickets.

And don’t forget to get off the National Mall sometime during your birthday trip! The city is made up of some incredible neighborhoods and I highly recommend exploring Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and Adams Morgan. Each has its own unique character, shops, and restaurants.

There are 24 Michelin-starred restaurants in DC with 8 added in 2023 alone. End your trip with a performance or concert at the stunning Kennedy Center and don’t forget to go to the rooftop bar to cheer in your new year!

However, if you go to Marbella any other time of the year, you can do other fantastic activities.

If you are after a relaxing birthday with your partner or group of friends, another great birthday idea is to visit the fantastic spa at Puente Romano Beach Resort. It is one of the best spas in Marbella, and you can pamper yourself, have massages and engage in wellness rituals using high-quality natural ingredients.

Buenos Aires by James Ian from Travel Collecting

50th Birthday Trip Ideas to Ring in the Big 5-0 in Style! (23)

For my 50th birthday, I wanted an adventure – but also the chance to celebrate my actual day with a fancy dinner. So, I headed to Buenos Aires for a delicious steak dinner and some (birthday) shopping. The hopped on another plane for a hiking vacation in Patagonia. First up was El Chalten and the an incredible hike to Laguna Torre which ends in a small iceberg-filled lake framed by dramatic jagged peaks.

Following this was the absolutely breathtaking Torres del Paine National Park. I decided that, being fifty and all, spending multiple days hiking the famous “O” trail with a tent and food on my back was not my preferred option, so I did day hikes to highlights. This included Grey Glacier and the icefields at the end of Grey Lake, a hike up French Valley where there were iconic views of the Cuernos del Paine (my personal favorite), and to see the Torres del Paine – three peaks that give the park its name.

I ended the trip with a day visiting Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate and a cruise to see more nearby glaciers.

It was the adventure of a lifetime and the perfect way to celebrate my 50th!

Venice by Joanna of The World in My Pocket

Venice is an incredible destination to celebrate your 50th anniversary in. The city has always been known for its romantic atmosphere, and it’s a great place to go with your loved one for a special birthday. As soon as you get off the beaten path of the main road that leads from the train station to Piazza San Marco, you will discover the real hidden gems in Venice, which will make your trip even more special.

Exploring the local areas of the city has the same charm as the city centre, but it comes without the crowds. Even if taking a gondola ride is an expensive experience, you must do this on your special anniversary. And even better, if you do it just before sunset, when it’s more atmospheric.

Don’t miss having an indulgent dinner at a restaurant by a canal, where you can enjoy the wonderful flavours of the lagoon such as the soft-shell crab, the pasta with giant langoustines, or the traditional Sarde in Saor.
